IMO using Odin for a while is a good idea. My first few time through the game with the aid of my extensive Super Nintendo FF3 Strategy Guide I realized you could exchange espers. Did anyone actually figure out how to do this with out cheating, I mean its kinda random, but anyways, whats a better stat a +1 in speed or the Quick gray spell? In the past I would just take Raiden but this time around I'm leveling up the characters I think would realistically be the fastest with Odin and after it's high enough then exchanging the esper.

Hands down, +1 speed. You have NO idea how important it use to make FULL use of this before changing Odin into Raiden. wink.gif (Edit: Not to mention that Odin is the only one that gives any bonus to speed, IIRC - unless you're playing the GBA version in which case there's really no reason to worry about it - the other esper's a +2 bonus, I think, and you can't lose that one. So...)

After you get your party's speed up to something decent, go for the switch. tongue.gif

You learn how to exchange the espers if you explore the underground castle enough. IIRC, you'll find a clue about taking a few steps from "where the queen stands," which opens up the passage that leads to Raiden. It's not all that random, but it's very, very easy to miss.

Well, Odin's +1 speed every time you level is divine.

But Raiden teaches quick, which is the best spell in the entire game.

So Raiden wins in my opinion.

Yeah, if you're playing the original, go for Quick. The Speed Boost really isn't all that valuable, and you can learn Meteor from Crusader.

I didn't miss it, maybe I got lucky though, IMO Raiden was better because of what you could learn but the speed advantage is a good thing too, I'd get Raiden however.

In the end, it boils down to two simple choices. Either you do or you don't.

you kinda answered your own question.. just get the speed bonuses you want and switch to Raiden after that. there is no need to choose between the two

I prefer Raiden: because he teaches quick. (except you could learn it even better in gba version)

So if Merton is so important, how can you make it not annihilate your party. Equip 4 Flame shields is one way, which now that I think about it is a great idea but I prefer a variety of different shields including the Paladin Sheild and Force Armor, armor that has high mag evade and defense. Other than just obtaining Merton for your Magicite "collection" I dont see any real value.

I kept Odin until I got Crusader, then switched. I didn't really pay much attention to the +1 speed boost, all I cared about was being able to teach my people Meteor. I haven't really used Raiden much, I just wanted to get it. BTW, this is on the GBA version.

I hardly care at all about espers, but if the boosts/spells were that important to me, I'd rather just go for Raiden because "Quick" is one of the most important spells to use in low-level challenges in both FFV and FFVI.

Speed has hardly any effect in FFVI's battle system's turn order unless you equip Running Shoes.

quick is the best cause imagine: u have cyan (or any other character, but i prefer cyan) ecuiped with genji glove (u can equip 2 weapons) and the offering (make u attack 4 times), now u can attack 8 times and if u cast quick on ur self u will attack 16 times!!! tongue.gif

For me, keeping Odin for that nice juicy speed bonus was tempting, but frankly I was just too lazy to take the time to get him, leave, go power level for speed, go back to Ancient Castle, transform him and go back to doing whatever I was doing previously. I know. I make it sound like alot more trouble than it is, but still.
