Ack. This game was from '93. For those who aren't sure if you've played it, you had 7 playable characters, after the seven runes. It was release on Super Nintendo.
So I'm stuck on it. You know how in the game, sometimes you have to fight other Aprentices to get a Rune? Yeah. I'm using Esuna, the elf. She has all her spells, the Star Rune (Doubles defence in battle), and the Light Rune (doubles magic power in battle) but I keep getting killed in the battle: And if you let yourself die in this game, your opponent will steal all your Runes. I'm up against Wilme, the red-orange demon-thing with claws. He massacres me all too often, and you can't use your apprentice partner (mines' Kamil) to help. So, here's the current tactic: I'll use the Star rune. Get smacked for 100 HP. Use Heal 3. Get smacked for 90ish HP. Use the Light Rune. Any fiire spells now only hit for 50, but I still get smacked for 100 HP. Heal 3. Smacked for 100 HP. Heal 3. Hit with a fire spell, I now have 150 HP. I use Ice 1 (It's more MP-efficient, and hits the same amount) for 60 MP- if it even hits him. Then I get smacked for 100 HP. Heal 3. Hit. Heal 3. Hit. Ice 1, he'll miss about 70% of the time. Use a full-recovery item, get hit, Heal 3.... Any suggestions? I'm not expecting much, as this is a very old, esoteric game but anything helps. I'm playing on a ROM, if that helps any... I loved that game
![]() Apprentices ALWAYS have higher stats than they should, and fight you at the same level you are at. In fact, the higher their level, the more exaggerated their stats. Plus some of them (like Wilme) get healing spells even though they shouldn't. It's important to try fighting them early, otherwise you're really in for it. Wear the Fire Cloak if you have it. It's right behind the armor shop in Duwain (forgot the exact name.) Ice 2 should do more damage than Ice 1, it has 80 power vs 32 (!!) so try using that for a bit - MP cost be damned (you can always just use MP catcher. ![]() Don't overlook items. They are extremely useful in this game. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Thanks
![]() Well, I'm not sure what town you're talking about. There's Telaine and Belaine if that's what you're talking about. (They're the ones in the war together) I've used all my Agility Seeds, etc. on her to help her as much as possible. And even though Ice 2 might hit harder, which usually Ice 1 gets them fine- Ice 2 costs 4x the MP, and only does 20 extra damage. Plus, they both miss him very often. I also have Blizzzard 2, but I'm not sure if that'll have any effect on him and I'd probably run out of MP/recoveries all too often ![]() -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. You're probably not far along enough yet for Duwain (Doweain? Something like that, I'm really not sure, lol...) If so, don't worry about it.
By items, I mean things like B.Protect and such. Although B.Protect is useless to you because it does the same thing your Rune does, other items might give you an edge. See what you can get ahold of. Some items can have the same effect as spells, so you can conserve MP that way. Right now your opponent's agressive and doesn't give you a chance to waste a turn if you can spare it. You have to deal out as much damage as you can, because shortening the fight by even one turn is worth it. You should be at least level 27 if you have Heal 3. This means you have over 150 MP - enough for a dozen castings of Ice 2. Blizzard spells are more expensive and do less damage so don't bother with them. Heal 3 is somewhat expensive so you can cut down on costs by using Potn3 (dunno if you can get them yet.) B.Ice from Belaine has the exact same effect as Ice 1 but costs 0 MP, and M.Siphn the same for MPCatcher (restores 40 of your MPs AND takes away 40 of Wilme's - even more worthwhile than the actual spell because you don't waste 8 MPs casting it.) You could try stocking up on M.Siphn and using those as often as you can until he runs out of MP. Then you'll just have physical attacks to worry about, and he won't be able to heal himself later in the battle. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

Let's see:
-I do have Potn3, but you can only carry 9 at a time, so that's not much help. -I like Wilme doing his magic attacks. I'd GIVE him MP if I could T.T Fire attack= 40/50 HP. Hitting attack= 110ish HP. Though good idea with the healing thing! His healing is the worst. -MPCatcher doesn't always work, which does suck. I'll try it on him, though! -I have Vacuum/Vacuum 2, but I'm hesitant to use them as I'm sure they wouldn't bode well at all (they didn't with Lux). I wish they could give Esuna spells to use which hurt your opponents. ![]() -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Actually, try Vacuum. I'm REALLY not sure if it'll work, but status immunities depend on what the characters have "equipped" during the battle. You just might get lucky. Save-state before the fight and give it a few tries. It probably won't work, but you've got nothing to lose.
![]() Apprentice battles with magic users are a real pain. Wilme is easy to defeat with physical attacks, but Esuna is rather lacking in the stabbity-stab-stab department... -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

XD I did it! Silverlance is my hero.
What I did was used a B Agility, which I never use as I never considered the importance of speed. Somehow, that made his attacks half as strong, and it increased my chance of hitting him with magic. Ice 2 actually did the same damage as Ice 1, but I used it just to be different. This could be because I use Ice 1 a lot- does it get more powerful with experience? I know other titles by Enix do so (Star Ocean 2). Muchos gracias ![]() -------------------- You're telling me that there's no hope. I'm telling you you're wrong. |

Congrats, I'm glad for ya. Apprentice battles are really rough in this game (which is actually quite a good thing - how many other fights have you been stuck on for a good day or so, most of which was spent trying out strategies and experimenting with your available options?
![]() I think the impact of your spells will broaden as your stats rise. I remember hitting some enemies for ~40-50 damage with Ice 1 and ~120 damage with Ice 2. I don't think it actually gets stronger with use, but then again I don't know much about the game's mechanics so maybe that's what it is. >"< 7th Saga had a few unusual things like that, like defending before attacking and such. I wouldn't rule it out. -------------------- "Judge not a man by his thoughts and words, but by the quality and quantity of liquor in his possession and the likelyhood of him sharing." |

This was one of my favorite games. I loved Valsu and Olvin (those were their names, right?). I beat the game solo with Valsu once, killing each of the appretices as I found them. He was so nasty. Huge defensive spells and healing spells = amazing in battle. What a game.
And Olvin does sick nasty amounts of damage with more or less any piece of equipment. And he can get into that one tower. Nice. ![]() -------------------- Is PJ |
